Dooms Day, the Apocalypse, is all set to happen on December 21, 2012 as predicted by various sources. Weeks from now we all will witness a historic event that might change the course of humanity. Even if nothing happens to the planet earth, astronomers are claiming that on this day something terrestrial will take place in the dark sky that will affect earth. This day has gathered more hype and anxiety than any of the events earlier happened. Even the most cynic would not keep a blind eye on December 21, 2012. Never in the history of mankind there have been so many theories that claim annihilation of the world brought down to a single date. We have various kinds of prediction regarding annihilation on earth. Religious, scientific and astrological gurus are claiming the end of the world on December 21, 2012. We can overlook at the predictions but we cannot deny the recent events that had taken place on earth like Terrorist attacks, Anarchy, floods, hurricanes, Tsunamis and many other events are pointing towards the tilt sign. We just have to ask how much more earth can take and for how long.
Viewing at this epic date with so many prospects shows that something might buildup but why so many theories point to same date?

Let’s look at some of the prominent theories about the Dooms Day:

The Theories

The Mayan Calendar: Mayan Literature emphasis on the tradition of World Ages. Mayan people created a calendar that ends exactly on December 21, 2012. However all the literature has not been found, so it is very hard to say anything with certainty. The Mayan calendar ends on 12-21-12, this is the most frightening phenomena of this theory.
The Hindu belief of End of “KALIYUG”: Hindu mythology has a description about the final form of the lord Vishnu, KALKI, who will come and end the “KalYug” The decadent age of human race. Guru Kalki Bhagwan also predicted 2012 DEC as the month of incarnation of KALKI and destruction of human kind. Hindu believes that Lord Vishnu incarnates himself in different forms and helps mankind. It is predicted that his last incarnation “KALKI” will born and hence the end of “KALYUG”.

Geomagnetic Reversal:

Geomagnetic Reversal is yet another phenomena that describes the pole shift that will ignite a huge solar flare having energy of thousands atomic bombs sufficient enough to end the world. This event occurs as a result of weakening of earth’s magnetic field. Interestingly this is also supposed to occur in the end of 2012. But this assumption is rejected by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as geomagnetic reversal is slow process and takes thousands to years to take place.
Nostradamus’s Prediction: Nostradamus’s prediction regarding apocalypse is very well known by us all but the thing that make it so special is that the earlier predictions that he made about some very well know events like the Tsunami & Obama actually came true. Even though the real book written by him isn’t available, researchers are claiming that this December might be the month he predicted for apocalypse.
The Astrological Belief: A Galactic alignment is all set to take place on December 21 2012 that would cause havoc on earth. In this alignment sun, earth and other planets will align roughly in same flat plane. This kind of huge galactic event will certainly affect earth but there are claims that this event has already occurred in 1998.

NASA’s Argument:

NASA has given arguments about all these theories and proved them not compatible enough to predict the earth’s future. For Mayan calendar they say that it is not the end of world but just an end of calendar’s year after which New Year begin. For pole shift the organization claimed that reverse rotation of the earth is impossible and reversal of poles is not possible. It also claimed that getting hit by an impact-able meteor is not possible, the last occurrence of this kind of event took place 65 million years ago. NASA said that the end of world will not be sudden but a gradual process that might take thousands of years to happen. NASA also denied any claims made by them about the Blackout on December 21, 2012.

The Scraped Theories:

Many theories regarding the judgment day have been created but only few have solid scientific and religious backbone to support them. Some of the theories that were dismissed on the basis of logic and evidence are:
Planet X: This theory of planet X is not a new one, it first surfaced in 1995. It says that a planet big enough, will pass by earth and due to gravitation force, it will collide with earth. Scientists have scraped this theory saying that if a planet ever comes close to earth than it would be easily visible. And no Planet X has appeared so far, so no collusion is predicted in near future.

The Photon Belt:

This is described as an interaction between earth and the biggest star Alcyone (Mythological beliefs), which will create the destruction of earth. However these theories are rubbished by the scientists saying that Photon cannot create belts.
The Alien Invasion: This one belief has raised so many times that now it’s like just another ghost story. People claim to see aliens are not new and the date is also not set for the invasion of the aliens. So we can easily rule out Alien invasion on December 21, 2012. Moreover scientist claims that if in universe there exist a life form that is more intelligent than human beings than why didn’t any of them visited earth yet. NASA has also claimed that no galactic alignment is expected in near future.

Cultural Effects:

Earlier also many predictions were made regarding apocalypse but all proved wrong, but none of these predictions affected day to day life as December 21, 2012 prediction has. We have been talking about end of the world since its beginning yet life goes on without even thinking about it.

Movies:

We have seen the impact of the movies that show end of the world. Needless to say the frightening thought we get just by viewing a motion picture that depicts this phenomenon. Way too many movies get their inspiration from the dooms day. The most recent Hollywood motion picture 2012 was a worldwide hit. It depicted the end of the world by increase in the temperature of earth due to global warming.
Government Interventions: Russian government quoted that they have a system of monitoring earth and they didn’t find anything suspicious that might end the world, their minister of emergency situation said this to end the panic among the citizens. In France there is a place called Bugarach Mountain, which according to popular belief is a very sacred place and no one will be harmed on those mountains at the time of apocalypse. French government is planning to bar the entry to that place till December 21, 2012.
Effects on Social Media: Social Media is all buzzing about December 21, 2012. Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler, Blogging Sites are all full on information and gags about the Dooms Day. Celebrities are also showing curiosity about apocalypse and so are their followers. The idea of apocalypse has a spine chilling effect on human beings and even when we are making gags on it, deep down inside we all are feeling a little frightened by it.
Media’s darling: Both Printed and electronic media are full of predictions and special shows, columns and articles regarding the world’s end on 12DEC12. This topic has become media darling and will continue to be till that Friday. Media has not shown any sensitivity towards this subject and has created an environment of panic. Even after government interventions, media is promoting Dooms Day as a product.

Internet:

Too many web pages launched which shown a countdown to December 21, 2012 during this year. Also many web sites were created by general people and authorities that have information regarding apocalypse. These web pages are generating huge traffic and are ranking very high on web pages. These web owners have created a brand “End of World” and are selling merchandise products from clothes to customized mugs. If you Google “end of the world” the first link that appears is of a web page that says “End of the world conformed” following this page comes NASA page that discards every rumor about apocalypse in 2012.

Other Apocalypse Predictions:

Apart from above predictions for December 21, 2012, many other astrologers, scientists and theorists have given many Dooms Day predictions like Romans claimed that 634 BCE would be the end of the world which as you all know, is false. According to other prediction of Nostradamus the world would have ended in 1999, July, which proved false. 2020-2037 is the time given to earth by the psychic Jeane Dixon. Orthodox Judaism claims that 2240 will be the end of the world. James Kasting claims that due to the level of carbon-dioxide in atmosphere the oxygen dependent species will die in 500,000,000. Various other scientist claims that in 5,000,000,000 the earth will be swallowed by sun.

Economic Apocalypse:

The end of the world may not be the kind of end that we expect it could be the end of a culture and money system on which mankind is sitting. This money system is so much rotten and dependent of money holders that it can collide any day now. Imagine a world without currency money, electronic money or any other form of money. The falling share market and commodity market has shown that it could also bring destruction on earth. The financial condition of third world is falling with a high rate and the developed nations are facing debt losses which are so huge that even a whole nation can fall apart in matter of days. World is also facing a shortage of energy and moving more and more towards destructive was of making energy like Nuclear energy. This might end of the world we know due to things we do, yes we will live but in war and anarchy over water and energy sources.

What would happen if the world that we know and care about so much comes to an end just like that? And what would be the disaster that will bring an end to earth. Thinkers claim that the loss of the moral values and ethics in human kind will be the reason for the end of the world but that day has time to come. It is very much possible that the world will end due to global warming but the question is will humanity just sit and let this happen? December 21, 2012 is expecting a supernatural calamity or a salvation by god or an undefined move of sun but these things are far beyond our limitation. If a human made disaster occurs, than will it give us a chance to retaliate and damage control? Or we can believe in NASA’s claims but not to forget that NASA was responsible of making wrong calculation in catching a shuttle capsule GENESIS. Whatever happens on December 21, 2012, still the world will face it as just another day full of probabilities and opportunities.
